Emotions and feelings are hard to deal with when you don't understand what they truly are. Emotions are just signals telling us something about our internal workings. For example, Fear shows us what matters, Anger shows us what boundaries are crossed and Anxiety tells us we are thinking too much about the future.

So what is the right way to deal with emotions?

The 4 A's of Emotional Regulation

  • Awareness - Recognise the emotions in your mind. At this stage you can engage in mindfulness. Meditate.
  • Acknowledge - Accept that the emotions exist and understand the your feelings and thoughts are separate from you. Harbour empathy.
  • Acceptance - For true acceptance you must journal those emotions. Be as specific and detailed as you can get. Dump those thoughts onto a paper.
  • Action - Now engage in some activity. It could be a simple walk but do it. Move your body.

Remember: Our thoughts are always mirrored in our reality.
